守望台加入聯合國非政府組織（NGO)十年之久，這件事曾經鬧得沸沸揚揚，按照守望台的公開信息，這都是一張聯合國的圖書卡惹的禍，本文是這一鬧劇的簡單曆史回放，詳情可參考資料來源。
In 1992, the Watchtower became an Associate NGO with the United Nations. This was despite spending decades condemning the UN as the scarlet coloured wild beast of Revelation. As a result, many Jehovah's Witnesses severed ties with the Watchtower for what they consider a hypocritical and dishonest chapter of the religion's history.
1992～2001年間·，守望台成為聯合國NGO正式成員。由于和守望台一貫的對聯合國的負面描述（啟示錄裏的怪獸）明顯相悖，很多耶和華見證人認為這是其組織曆史上一個虛偽不誠實的汙點。
在眾多質疑聲中，聯合國2001年對守望台在最近的十年裏被接受成為NGO成員表示驚訝。在2004年的公開信中，聯合國重申了加入NGO必須的條件，其中之一是每個成員必須遵守聯合國憲章，其次，每年NGO成員都必須不斷進行資格更新（Renewal）。
The UN itself admitted yesterday that it was surprised that the sect, whose formal name is the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York, had been accepted on its list of non-governmental organisations for the last 10 years."
那麼，成為NGO組織成員的必須條件是什麼呢？
the Watchtower was an associated NGO and to become associated required the Watchtower to accept the following:
1） that the NGO share the ideals of the UN Charter;
遵循聯合國憲章
2）have a demonstrated interest in United Nations issues and a proven ability to reach target or specialized audiences, such as educators, media representatives, policy makers and the business community;
對聯合國事務感興趣
3）have the commitment and means to conduct effective information programs about UN activities by publishing newsletters, bulletins and pamphlets, organizing conferences, seminars and round tables; and enlisting cooperation of the media.
有效參與聯合國各項活動
這個事件的時間點大致如下﹕
×1991年，守望台提出NGO加入申請；
×1992年，守望台正式獲得NGO成員許可；
×1992年-2001年，守望台每年和聯合國續約成員資格；
×2001年，在不斷質疑聲中，守望台宣布退出NGO，不再續約。

在提交NGO成員申請報告的同年，守望台在其1991年6月的出版物裏，公開抨擊，當今所有主要的宗教組織都通過加入NGO卷入聯合國事務。
As late as 1991, the Watchtower condemned Christendom for its involvement with the United Nations:
"All major world religions are accredited to the United Nations as non-governmental organizations. For example, no less than twenty-four Catholic organizations are represented at the UN."
A recent book gives an idea when it states: "No less than twenty-four Catholic organizations are represented at the UN. Several of the world's religious leaders have visited the international organization. Most memorable were the visits of His Holiness Pope Paul VI during the General Assembly in 1965 and of Pope John Paul II in 1979. Many religions have special invocations, prayers, hymns and services for the United Nations. The most important examples are those of the Catholic, the Unitarian-Universalist, the Baptist and the Bahai faiths."" Watchtower 1991 Jun 1 p.17
亮點2﹕加入、退出NGO原因------- 一張圖書館惹的禍？
2001年事件曝光見報後，面對質疑，守望台宣布退出NGO的原因是﹕
（1）1991年加入NGO的原因是需要訪問聯合國圖書館資料；
（2）2001年退出NGO的原因是加入NGO成員的規則改變。
In a letter to the Branches, membership was explained away as the Watchtower's research department requiring access to United Nations library, claiming that in 1991 it became necessary to register as an NGO to have continued access. It also claimed it left on learning the "criteria for association as an NGO's" had changed.

"Since 1946, the Dag Hammarskjold Library of the United Nations Secretariat in New York has arranged for the distribution of United Nations documents and publications to users around the world through its depository library system. At present, there are more than 400 depository libraries in over 140 countries maintaining United Nations material from the date of designation as depository to the present. The general public can consult the material free of charge at any depository library."
從1946年開始，聯合國分部在140個國家400多個圖書館面向公眾免費開放。
為此，聯合國專門寫給守望台總部一封公開信，強調完全不需要注冊NGO就可以免費訪問聯合國的圖書館資源。

接著，2002年3月18日，聯合國又寫給守望台總部一封公開信，強調加入NGO的規則1991年以來從未改變。

那麼，加入聯合國的真實原因是什麼呢？沒有守望台總部正面的回答，人們只能猜測了。
點評﹕
從聯合國事件的危機處理過程來看，守望台總部通過編造申請聯合國圖書卡的理由掩蓋加入NGO的真實原因，明顯挑戰世人的智商，而聯合國抓住守望台的小辮子不放，不依不饒，針尖對麥芒，表現得的確如怪獸般“邪惡”！
